Some of the Science Behind the Diet-Sleep Connection
Our program goes into much more detail, but here's a few essential bits of information about the impact poor sleep can have on the hormones that affect appetite and fat storage:
Not enough sleep and your body tries to make up for the lack of energy by craving sugars, carbs and a higher calorie count in general
In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine involving 320 patients, the people with a more severe case of the sleep disorder had a higher intake of calories, protein, cholesterol and saturated fat.
The Quebec Family Study, published earlier this year, followed 276 adults and found that short sleepers (five to six hours a night) were 35% more likely than average sleepers to have an 11-pound weight gain over six years.
Without good sleep, the levels of the hormone ghrelin go way up. Ghrelin is produced in the gastrointestinal tract and stimulates appetite. So getting good sleep is probably the most natural appetite suppressant in the world!
Without good sleep, the levels of the hormone leptin go way down. Leptin is produced in the fat cells and sends the signal to your brain that you are full. What does that mean? It means you don't feel satisfied after you eat because the messenger hormone level is depleted by poor sleep. So the part of your brain that's supposed to say "I'm full" essentially falls asleep on the job if your body hasn't gotten enough sleep.
The combination of ghrelin going up and leptin going down means you're always hungry and never feel full until you have to "loosen you belt".
People who consistently sleep less than eight hours per night over time develop a higher level of body fat than those who have healthy sleep! Additionally, according to the findings of one scientific study which you can read in the Diet-Sleep Connection Manual, the heaviest people are the ones who sleep the least!
Clearly, these sleep hormones are something every dieter should have at the top of their priority list!
Imagine, all your prior efforts at losing weight might have worked had you not had poor sleep working against you! Better yet - think of how your current efforts of dieting and exercise could be easily turbo-charged with the power of sleep working in your favor!
